<![CDATA[

We’re eagerly looking forward to soon heading over to the PNE Forum for Knit City Vancouver! We can’t wait to meet up with local makers and SOS Members at our SweetGeorgia booth and Knitter’s Lounge space. We’ll be bringing along with us our new Enigma Collection colourways along with popular favourites from our Colour System collections, spinning fibres, kits and other goodies.

At this year’s show, we’re also bringing along with us a special new colourway exclusive only to Knit City attendees! There will be a limited quantity available on our Tough Love Sock yarn base as well as two spinning fibre bases: BFL+Silk and Targhee, so be sure to stop by and pick yours up before they’re all gone!

Over at our Knitter’s Lounge space, we welcome everyone to come and sit, relax and enjoy some time making with us. We’ll have some community knitting projects you can test out and add to, and we’ll be around helping to answer any questions you might have about the School of SweetGeorgia. As part of the School, don’t miss the following meetup and demo sessions:

Saturday, September 23rd

  • 1-2:30pm: Seaming Demo + Meet & Greet with Holli Yeoh
  • 2:45pm: Fibre Prep Demo + Meet & Greet with Kim McKenna, Diana Twiss & Rachel Smith

Sunday, September 24th

  • 11am: Tapestry Weaving Party + Meet & Greet with Janna Maria Vallee
  • 3pm: Weaving Demo + Meet & Greet with Felicia Lo

If you’ve not yet been to a Knit City festival, we highly suggest you come and check it out. It’s a fabulous event filled with wonderful makers across all aspects of the fibre arts and more. It is one of our favourite times of year to chat and connect with members of the local fibre arts community. (See last year’s Knit City Recap video for a bit on what to expect.)

Note: As we will be packing up and moving items to Knit City, our Studio Shop will be closed from Thursday, September 21st to Monday, September 25th. We will reopen on Tuesday, September 26th with regular hours. Our online shop will still remain open for placing orders throughout the weekend.

We look forward to seeing you there!

We knit, we partied, we might have even played a little music, and now it’s time for the full reveal of the Playin’ My Song Mystery Knit-Along Shawl!

About Playin’ My Song

The shawl begins by working a classic top-down triangle, beginning with a Garter Tab Cast-On and then increasing every right-side row. Once it’s too the desired length, the triangle ends are divided in half. Each half is then worked lengthwise on the bias.

The result is a decadent, texture-rich trapezoid shaped stole that is utterly wrappable.

Stitch Diaries: Season Five is here!

As some of you know, I have a deep love of swatching. It comes from a desire to see how a stitch pattern and yarn can come together to highlight the beauty of the colour. The Stitch Diaries are the perfect playground for that, especially when it involves our dye team having the chance to experiment with dye and hue.

What do these sets mean for you, the knitter? Besides a new knitting project, you’ll get stitch patterns, tips, tricks, and a pattern recipe to use any stitch pattern you prefer in a beautiful booklet. And that booklet is paired with a unique, custom colourway from one team member. This season, Rachael is giving is all the gorgeous autumn vibes in a Party of Five set.

Sometimes, it’s just a little shift we can make to open a whole new world of play and growth. Or, in this case, we just need a little slip of a stitch.

Stitch Diaries: Season Five Set Includes:

  • One custom Party of Five colourway imagined and designed by a SweetGeorgia team member: Cabin Cove on Tough Love Sock.
  • A 14-page booklet that is half stitch dictionary and half pattern recipe. You can take any of the five slipped stitch patterns and place them inside the included Autumn Oaks knitted cowl pattern for a beautiful fall layering piece.
  • An Eco Wash Bag SoakBox Slim (assorted scent)

Stitch Diaries: Season Five

  • Needles: Size 6 US / 4 mm circular needles, 24″ / 60 cm long
Adjust needle size if necessary to get the correct gauge.
  • Notions: 1 stitch marker, tapestry needle
  • Gauge: 25 sts and 44 rows = 4″ / 10 cm in desired Stitch Patt (select one from Stitch Diaries), after blocking.
Please note that changes in gauge will also change yardage used and final measurements.
  • Finished Measurements: 24″ / 60 cm circumference, 16″ / 40 cm tall

Stitch Diaries: Season Five

You can get Stitch Diaries: Season Five right over HERE. It’s only available this quarter, so grab it while you can. With the holidays coming up, this is the perfect gift for your knitter friend who seems to have everything.

A little slip or a little colour can make all the difference.

<![CDATA[

When most of us hear the word ‘neutral’, we immediately think ‘boring’. They’re ubiquitous; they go with everything; and they don’t seem to have distinct personalities of their own. Why use them when we have entire rainbows of hand-dyed yarns available? But by glossing over neutral shades, we’re actually missing out on a huge array of exciting options for knitting, crochet, weaving, and more. If you’ve ever wanted to take full advantage of the surprising bounty neutrals have to offer, these tips and tricks will help you do just that.

Neutrals Are Colours Too!

We’re often told that neutrals aren’t really colours—they just exist to be paired with ‘real’ colours like magenta and cerulean and emerald. But did you know the neutrals actually exist on the colour wheel? Browns and greys are what happen when pure hues, usually triadic or complementary, are mixed together. Colour is a spectrum, like a gradient with infinite shades between hues. Neutrals exist in the in-between places. The reason we don’t see them show up on colour wheels is that wheels usually only show the pure hues and maybe some analogous shades. But treating them as colours—with value, saturation, and undertones—instantly makes them easier to use and combine. (For more info on hue, check out Tabetha’s article on the SweetGeorgia blog here.)

With that in mind, let’s get practical and apply this to some surprising neutral colour combinations.

Highlighting a Pure Hue

Since neutrals are a blend of other colours, they’re naturally more subtle and low-key. Next to a pure hue, they recede. This might sound like code for ‘uninteresting’, but it’s a powerful tool to heighten the impact of that pure hue. And with the right combination of undertones, that pure hue can actually liven up the neutral shades.

In the example above, I’ve chosen an assortment of neutral shades and paired them with a clear pink. The neutrals all have warm undertones, so the overall effect is cohesive and soothing, similar to an analogous colour palette. But unlike an analogous colour palette, where the delicate pink would have to compete with other shades in the same family, these neutral shades recede and give it the spotlight. This same trick also works with jewel tones and darker neutrals. Be sure to read Tabetha’s article on analogous palettes for more of the theory behind these types of combos.

In A Gradient with Pure Hues

Remember how neutrals exist in the in-betweens on the colour wheel? Use that to your advantage when building gradients! We all love a seamless transition from one colour to another, and neutrals can help to achieve that, especially in a gradient between hues that aren’t in the same colour family.

Using neutrals in surprising ways colour paletteThis example is an orange-to-blue gradient. Many common greys are actually a mixture of blue and orange, which means they can be used as transitional colours. See the slow transition from bright orange and rust to grey and finally dark blue? When buying yarns for this type of gradient, look for neutrals with strong undertones. Rusty browns, greys with a hint of green or purple, and blacks with a hint of blue fit beautifully between brighter shades.

Play With Other Forms of Contrast

If you really want to challenge yourself and up your colour game, limit yourself to only neutrals. It might sound counterintuitive, but eliminating more distinct colours can teach colour theory like nothing else. With less contrast of hue, other forms of contrast, such as value, become even more important. Think of the classic trick for assembling colourwork palettes—photographing your colours in greyscale to check the contrast. Neutral-only palettes use the same principle.

Using neutrals in surprising ways colour paletteEach of the two neutral palettes above utilizes a different form of contrast. The first uses contrast of temperature. Most of the shades are cool greys, with a pop of warm brown as the focal point. The second uses contrast of value; the pale grey pops against darker greys and deep browns.

Let Those Neutrals Shine!

I hope this has inspired you to take a closer look at neutrals! Next time you pick colours for a project, consider whether giving white, black, grey, or brown a chance would reveal nuances and potential combos you wouldn’t have thought of otherwise. With a little creativity, these ‘boring’ colours don’t have to stay boring—they can open up a whole new world of colour possibilities.

Colourway swatches shown in the blog images above, listed from top to bottom:

  • Cover Image: Birch, Silver, Tumbled Stone, Charcoal, Old Letters
  • Ocean Sunset: Camellia, Portobello, Rustic, Mink, Marine
  • Snowy Beach: Silver, Slate, Charcoal, Cauldron, Boreal Forest
  • Mountainscape: Charcoal, Cauldron, Black Truffle, Brown Sugar, Snowfall

create different results by changing the colours

The post Reimagining Three Shawls Three Ways appeared first on SweetGeorgia Yarns.

<![CDATA[

If there’s anything we love more than a good shawl knitting pattern, it’s being able to create different results for the same pattern simply by changing or re-arranging the colours. Thinking outside the box means we get to experience the design in wondrous new ways.

We took three gorgeous shawls and worked them up in three different ways. I’m calling them the Reimagined Three of 2023. Tume, Stone Blossom by Emily Wood, and Soft Twilight by Corrina Ferguson showcase just how much a slight change in hue or shade can have dramatic impact.

Let me show you how we’ve played with these shawl knitting patterns.

Monochrome Magic

One hue is all it takes for a bold effect, especially if you play with the saturation or value of that one colour. We worked each shawl in a monochrome palette and the results were as gorgeous as we’d hoped.

Stone Blossom in a blue monochrome palette

We chose CashLuxe Fine and worked the main body of the shawl in Moonlight and the Old Shale border in Tempest.

Soft Twilight in purple monochrome palette

We alternated Nightcall and Twilight (in BFL + Silk Fine) every four rows in the gorgeous cable and lace pattern throughout.

Tume in a green monochrome palette

We used Forest Walk and Boreal Forest colours in Mohair Silk DK to make this variation following the original instructions.

Warm Mediterranean Sunset

The golds, reds, and blues of the Mediterranean sunset inspired the colours in these three variations. The mood these colours evoke is striking in contrast to the monochrome palettes!

Stone Blossom in a warm multi-colour palette

We stuck with the original instructions but swapped out the hues to Glow (a full skein of Tough Love Sock) and the Blazing Trails Party of Five set.

Soft Twilight in a warm multi-colour palette

We followed the original instructions for this knit shawl, too, but changed out the shades to the dreamy Spilling Secrets Party of Five set.

Tume in a warm multi-colour palette

We used full skeins of Honey Gold (Main Colour) and Amber Ale (Contrast Colour) in the same set-up as the original shawl pattern, except we swapped the yarn out for Tough Love Sock. Then, we held the Tough Love Sock double-stranded throughout with the Tempest colourway in Merino Silk Lace. The marled look throughout, with the subtle change in gold, created such a delightful result!

Party Punch

And for our third variation of these three shawls, we kicked things up a notch with bright, vivacious party shades. Think poolside lemonade, watermelon bites, and your favourite float for a fun summer knit.

Stone Blossom in a bright palette

This variation uses two Party of Five sets (Picnic in the Park and Fruit Salad), working one colour at a time until it ran out. We started the main body with the blue end of the first set, worked through to the yellow, and then for the border, worked from orange to dark pink.

Soft Twilight in a bright palette

Three poolside hues of Coastline, Jam Tart, and Seaside in Mohair Silk Fine are alternated every four rows throughout the entire length of the shawl. SO fun!

Tume in a bright palette

Talk about a difference with just changing colours! We used Superwash DK in Crushed Berry and Mandarin.

Reimagine Your Own Shawl Knitting Pattern

If you’re eager to dream up a new take on an old pattern, start by choosing an inspiration photo. What colours drew you to it?

Then think about how to combine those colours. Alternating rows? Working two or three-stranded marle? Colour blocks? Once you decide the colour arrangement, then you can think about the yarns needed to achieve the effect.

The rest is just knitting and seeing where the hues take you!

I hope you grab these updated versions of Emily’s, Corrina’s, and my patterns for your next knitting project and explore changing it up, too! Right now, through August 29, get the pattern at 10 percent off here on our website (Stone Blossom, Tume, Soft Twilight) and on Ravelry (Tume and Soft Twilight only).

Be sure to share your photos with us by tagging us on social media (#sweetgeorigayarns).

we're so excited to cast on with you

<![CDATA[

Clue One for the Playin’ My Song Mystery Knit-Along is hitting inboxes today! I’m so excited to cast on this project with all of you.

One of the perks of being a SweetGeorgia employee is the yarn you collect over the years, so I had a wealth of stash yarns to choose from. For this shawl, I’m going to use Afternoon Nap (the variegated) as my Main Colour, Mellow (Gold) for Contrast Colour 1, and Watershed for Contrast Colour 2. Drop a comment below and let me know the colours you’re partying with.

Tabetha's colour picks for Playin' My Song MKAL - Afternoon Nap, Watershed, and Mellow on Tough Love Sock

Suggested Daily Knitting Quota

I’m blocking a bit of time in the mornings before work to squeeze in my clue knitting. If you know me, you know I live by a knitting quota to keep me on track. I may want to party, but that doesn’t mean I throw my organizational skills out the window. Haha! I’m going to suggest you follow these guidelines for the Playin’ My Song MKAL this week.

  • If knitting 6 days a week, aim for 20 rows a day.
  • If knitting 5 days a week, aim for 24 rows a day.
  • If knitting 4 days a week, aim for 29 rows a day.
  • If knitting 3 days a week, aim for 39 rows a day.

The worry about mystery knits is the internal pressure to keep up. It might be fun to keep pace with others, but don’t let that deter you. There’s no need to finish “on time” because there’s really no deadline. Let this mystery knit walk you through new stitches and just savour the journey of discovery as it unfolds. That’s the goal here.

Where’s the Party?

Inside your Planning PDF and in Clue One, you’ll find a link that’ll take you to a sign-up page. That’s where you’ll sign up to receive the links for our Zoom knit-along parties. The first one is today, so I hope you join me! Of course, you’ll also find us all hanging out in the SweetGeorgia Yarns Discord #mystery knit-along channel, too.

Tutorials for Playin’ My Song

For this project, you might find the How to Garter Tab Cast-On, Weaving in Ends Along the Way, How to Match Lace Yarn Overs, How to S2kp Decrease, and Alternating Yarns tutorials helpful. Visit www.schoolofsweetgeorgia.com for more workshops and courses to expand your fibre skills.

You can join the MKAL at ANY time, so hop over to the SweetGeorgia shop or Ravelry, grab a copy, and join us for the party later today. We might just be playin’ your song.

Cast on for the Playin’ Our Song SweetGeorgia Mystery Shawl Knit-Along is one week from today! That’s one week to buy the discounted presale pattern (here or on Ravelry), find some yarn, and work up your swatches for what I think is going to be a slammin’ good time.

Knitting Along Together

I’ve pulled three colours from my vast array of SweetGeorgia Yarns stash and am going to knit one right along with you. We’re going to be chatting and sharing photos over on the SweetGeorgia Yarns Discord server, in the #mysteryknitalong channel (which is totally free to join). I’ll be right there to answer questions that might pop up.

I’m also hosting THREE Zoom knit-togethers! You’ll need to sign up via the link found inside the Planning PDF (you receive that upon purchase) so that you can receive the Zoom links before the meetups. These are very low-key events where we’ll knit, chat, and goof off together.

  • Tue, Aug 15 at 2pm EST / 11 am PST
  • Tue, Aug 22 at 1pm EST / 10 am PST
  • Thur, Aug 31 at 1:30pm EST / 10:30 PST

And if my pretty face isn’t enough, then I have some prizes to woo you. Wink. For every photo of your MKAL project you share in the Discord channel throughout the MKAL or tagged #sweetgeorgiaMKAL image on Instagram, you’ll be entered in a drawing for one of three prizes (and they’re going to be good ones, too!). Much to the chagrin of my coworkers, I will be dutifully logging everyone’s name on my drawing list every week, so be sure to give me a challenge. GRIN.

We took some of the guesswork out of it and made kits that are ready to ship. If you order right now, you just might get it in time!

Mystery Knits Make Me Nervous

If you’re like me, you might be a little hesitant to join in on a mystery knit-along.

  • Maybe it’s the fear of being able to keep up. The timeline is set-up the way it is for a variety of reasons (such as my own work schedule and being able to devote time to being with you on this project, ensuring it’s got a *little* challenge to it, and timing with other company-wide events), but let me stress: you do not have to keep up. It’s fun to be able to knit along with other people at the same time on the same project, but that doesn’t mean you have to go out on a limb to maintain a pace that is not comfortable or doable for you. Just knit when you can, join in on the frivolity, and finish when you are ready and able to finish.
  • Or maybe it’s the discomfort of not knowing what to expect. This means putting a fair bit of trust in me and my design skills. A trust that I value above all else. I work hard to create a project that I think you will enjoy making. I want you to know that I value you and the time you have to invest in your knitting, and I always aim to create a shawl you’ll enjoy making.
  • Or you worry that you’ll hate the finished shawl. Well, I sure hope you don’t hate it. Haha! I may not knock it out of the park all the time. Art is subjective and I completely understand that my idea of pretty might differ from yours. If that happens, then I want you to remember that the shawl is always rippable and you can use your yarn for something else. But I hope you enjoy the journey. 😊

Maybe a mystery knit just isn’t the right thing for you. And that’s okay. We will reveal the full pattern on September 12, so you can always knit it later.

You can find all the pattern details on Playin’ My Song MKAL pattern page here on our website or over on Ravelry. The pattern is available at the discounted presale price of C$6.50, but only until August 14. Grab it today and I’ll see you August 15!

what is yarn weight and what is its purpose in your project

The post Demystifying Yarn Weight appeared first on SweetGeorgia Yarns.

]]>
<![CDATA[

When learning to knit, crochet or weave, you’ll encounter a term called “yarn weight.” But what is yarn weight and what is its purpose in your project? That’s exactly what I’m going to talk about.

What is Yarn Weight?

In simplest terms, it’s the thickness and density of the yarn. Manufactueres use a categorization system to assign a weight, or label, for each thickness. The most common system used in the Craft Yarn Council Standard Yarn Weight System.

A quick (and relatively subjective way) of determining the weight of your yarn is with a trick called Wraps per Inch or WPI. Take a length of yarn and wrap it snugly (not too tight, not too loose) around a ruler for one inch, making sure there aren’t any gaps between the strand wraps.

Wraps per inch for yarn weights

The more WPI, the thinner the yarn, and vice versa. It’s not an exact science, but it gets the job done.

Yarn Weight & Gauge

Of course, each manufacturer has slight variations, but you’ll notice on the back of their labels a bit of information on stitch gauge and needle size. These are the “recommended” sizes to achieve a balanced stockinette stitch fabric that is firm enough that your finger can’t poke through, but loose enough to provide drape. It is *not* (I repeat NOT) the “required” needle size and gauge you have to use.

Designers choose yarn weight, needle sizes, and stitch patterns to create the desired drape, look, and feel for their designs. Think of those yarn weight labels as a start point only. Your goal is to know the effect you’re going for, the stitch pattern you’re using, and then you’ll choose a needle size that helps your yarn achieve that look.

So, let’s look at those yarn weights and what they mean.

Lace Weight

Lace weight yarn is the finest and lightest of all yarn weights. With a thread-like texture, this delicate yarn is often used for intricate lace patterns and lightweight projects like shawls, scarves, and delicate garments.

WPI: 30 to 40+

Needle + Stitch Gauge Starting Point: US 000 to 1 needles will put you in the ballpark of 8.25 to 10+ stitches per inch.

Hook + Stitch Gauge Starting Point: Size B1 will put you in the ballpark of 8 to 10.5+ double crochets per inch.

Fingering Weight

Slightly heavier than lace weight, fingering weight yarn is still quite thin. It is often referred to as sock weight yarn (because it’s a great sock weight), but it’s gained popularity over the years for shawls, hats, baby sweaters, and garments.

WPI: 18-30

Needle + Stitch Gauge Starting Point: US 1-3 needles will put you in the ballpark of 6.75-8 stitches per inch.

Hook + Stitch Gauge Starting Point: Sizes B1-E4 will put you in the ballpark of 5.25-8 single crochets per inch.

Sport Weight

This weight falls between fingering and DK (Double Knitting) weight. It’s perfect for a range of projects, like lightweight garments and accessories, thanks to its balance of thickness and lightness. Its moderate weight makes it ideal for creating projects that can be worn year-round.

WPI: 14-18

Needle + Stitch Gauge Starting Point: US 3-5 needles will put you in the ballpark of 5.75-6.5 stitches per inch.

Hook + Stitch Gauge Starting Point: Sizes E4-7 will put you in the ballpark of 4-5 single crochets per inch.

DK Weight

DK-weight yarn, also known as Double Knitting weight, falls between the sport weight and worsted-weight categories. It is a versatile and popular yarn choice, especially in Europe and the United Kingdom. The term “double knitting” can be slightly misleading, as it doesn’t refer to knitting with two strands of yarn. It just means it’s suitable for creating lightweight, double-layered fabrics.

WPI: 12-15

Needle + Stitch Gauge Starting Point: US 5-7 needles will put you in the ballpark of 4.25-6 stitches per inch.

Hook + Stitch Gauge Starting Point: Sizes 7-I9 will put you in the ballpark 3-4.25 single crochets per inch.

Worsted Weight

One of the most popular and widely used yarn weights, worsted-weight yarn is neither too thick nor too thin. Its versatility makes it suitable for a wide range of projects, from sweaters and blankets to scarves and home decor items. If you’re new to crocheting or knitting, use worsted-weight yarn. It shows stitches clearly and helps you finish projects faster.

WPI: 9-12

Needle + Stitch Gauge Starting Point: US 7-9 needles will put you in the ballpark of 4-5 stitches per inch.

Hook + Stitch Gauge Starting Point: Sizes I9-K10 ½ will put you in the ballpark 2.75-3.5 single crochets per inch.

Chunky Weight

Chunky weight yarn is slightly thicker than worsted weight, providing a warm and cozy feel to projects. It is commonly used for knitting or crocheting heavier sweaters, blankets, and outerwear. The added thickness creates a more substantial fabric, making it perfect for cold weather projects.

WPI: 6-9

Needle + Stitch Gauge Starting Point: US 9-11 needles will put you in the ballpark of 3-3.75 stitches per inch.

Hook + Stitch Gauge Starting Point: Sizes K10 ½-M13 will put you in the ballpark 2-2.75 single crochets per inch.

Super Bulky Weight

As the name suggests, super bulky weight yarn is thick and creates projects with significant heft and warmth. It’s great for last-minute gifts or big projects like scarves, cowls, and blankets. Because of its thickness, it may not be suitable for intricate stitch patterns but is perfect for projects that require a quick finish.

WPI: 5-6

Needle + Stitch Gauge Starting Point: US 11-17 needles will put you in the ballpark of 1.75-2.25 stitches per inch.

Hook + Stitch Gauge Starting Point: Sizes M13-Q will put you in the ballpark 1.75-2.25 single crochets per inch.’

Jumbo Weight

Jumbo wight, or as I call it, super-duper-bulky yarn is the heaviest yarn category, and it results in projects with a bold, chunky, and luxurious appearance. This yarn is ideal for creating warm and cozy winter accessories, like chunky beanies, scarves, and cowls. Its thickness often demands the use of large needles or hooks, which makes projects progress even faster.

WPI: 1-4

Needle + Stitch Gauge Starting Point: US 17+ needles will put you in the ballpark of 6 > stitches per inch.

Hook + Stitch Gauge Starting Point: Sizes Q+ will put you in the ballpark 6 > single crochets per inch.

If you use smaller needles for stockinette stitch, the fabric will be denser and larger needles will make it airier. And then, if you change things up with your stitch pattern, you have even more room to play!

Knowing the difference between them is going to help you achieve the desired results in your knitting, crocheting, or weaving projects. It also means you have a starting place when trying to figure out a good yarn substitution.

Each yarn weight has its unique characteristics, making it suitable for specific types of projects. From the delicate lace weight to the super bulky weight, there’s a yarn weight for every creative endeavour.

the magical transformation of fluffy wool to a continuous yarn

The post Learning to Spin Changed My Life appeared first on SweetGeorgia Yarns.

<![CDATA[

I am going to make a pretty bold statement in today’s Taking Back Friday video… learning how to spin changed my life. And for that reason, I think spinning is the gateway craft to the rest of the fibre arts.

In my 20s, I got curious about where yarn comes from and how yarn itself is made. I had stumbled on a bag of spinning fibre and spindle at a local fair, and at the time I didn’t buy it, but it planted a seed. I remember looking at the bag, reading the instructions on how to spin, and I thought “it sounds like so much work, why would anyone do that?”. But then I couldn’t get the idea out of my head. A couple of months later at a local wool shop, I bought a spindle and bag of Corriedale fibre. That magical transformation of seeing this fluffy, woolly fibre turn into this long continuous piece of yarn. That feeling of drafting the fibre apart and making something new. All of this was so amazing to me and within a week, I went back to the store and bought a spinning wheel.

How did you learn to spin, and did it lead you to another craft? Did it change how you knit or how you see yarn? I would love to hear from you in the comments about your spinning experience.

the why's and why not's of choosing silk for your next project

The post The Pros and Cons of Silk Yarn Blends appeared first on SweetGeorgia Yarns.

]]>
<![CDATA[

Silk yarn and fibre blends have gained popularity over the years and for good reason! Sheen, softness, and strength all in one fibre. Whether you’re a knitter, crocheter, weaver, or even spinner, silk is a great option for nearly every project.

SweetGeorgia Yarns has a variety of silk blends, including: Flaxen Silk Fine, BFL + Silk Fine, CashSilk Lace, Silk Mist, SeaSilk Lace… just to name a few. There’s also Polwarth + Silk Fibre and BFL + Silk Fibre for the spinners.

Lots of silky options! Why choose it? Let me break down the whys and why nots of choosing silk yarn or fibre for your next project.

BFL+Silk DK, one of SweetGeorgia Yarn's silk yarn blends

BFL+Silk DK SweetGeorgia Yarn

Benefits

SO SOFT: One of the primary reasons silk yarn blends are sought after is the incredible softness they bring to your projects. The combination of silk with other materials, such as wool, cashmere, or cotton, makes the yarn more comfortable.

Beautiful Sheen: Silk yarn has a natural sheen that adds a touch of sophistication to your creations. When blended with other fibres, the sheen can be subtle or more pronounced depending on the ratio and fibre combination.

Temperature Regulation: Silk is a fantastic insulator, making it suitable for a wide range of climates. Silk yarn helps keep you cool in warm weather and warm in cold weather. In fact, it’s actually warmer and heavier than wool! Blending with other fibres can improve the fabric’s properties, making it comfortable to wear year-round.

Strength and Durability: Despite its delicate appearance, silk is a remarkably strong fibre. When blended with other yarns, it enhances the overall strength and durability of the yarn. This makes silk yarn blends an excellent choice for projects that require long-lasting quality and can withstand regular use.

When You’ll Want to Choose Silk Yarn or Fibre

You’ll want to choose silk yarn or fibre when:

  • You’re planning a project with drape or looseness
  • You need extra warmth or weight
  • You want an elegant, lustrous sheen to your project
  • You’re looking for strength and longevity
  • You need a yarn that makes lace stitches shine
Polwarth+Silk Spinning Fibre in "Rocky Mountain Meadow" colourway; one of many silk yarn and fibre blends from SweetGeorgia

Polwarth+Silk Spinning Fibre

Drawbacks

Price: Silk yarn blends are more expensive than yarns made from synthetic or other natural fibres. The cost of silk itself, coupled with the blending process, increases the price tag. If you’re on a tight budget or have a large project in mind, the cost of silk yarn blends may be a limiting factor.

Care: While silk yarns are very strong, they get weaker when wet, so handwashing or dry-cleaning is important to maintain integrity.

Lack of Elasticity: Because silk is inelastic, it has a tendency to stretch and lose shape (especially with gravity). Blending with more elastic fibres will help with this. Proper blocking and storing techniques are necessary to preserve the quality of your finished item.

Slippery: The slick nature of silk yarn can be a challenge for beginner knitters and crocheters. Using grabbier needles will help with this, though. The slipperiness and lack of elasticity can make it difficult to keep tension, so care must be taken to avoid misshapen effects.

When You’ll Want to Avoid Silk Yarn or Fibre

You’ll want to avoid silk yarn or fibre when:

  • You’ve got your eye on colourwork or heavily textured patterns like cables or ribbing
  • You’re design is figure-hugging or needs to fit close
  • You’re project is long enough and you don’t want it to grow longer
  • The project is intended for babies or kids where handwashing might be frustrating

What Can You Make with Silk Yarns?

Oh, we have lots of options for you! Lacy, lightweight, and incredibly elegant pieces that showcase all of silk’s most wonderful qualities.

Silk yarn blends offer a luxurious and elegant touch to your knitting or crocheting projects. So, go ahead, indulge yourself in the world of silk and create stunning masterpieces that showcase the epitome of luxury and style.

We just got back from the h+h Americas show in Chicago. Now, this is the first time that SweetGeorgia has attended any trade event since 2019 (for obvious reasons), and I was honestly really nervous about the show. So on today’s Taking Back Friday, I wanted to share some of the thoughts that I’ve had since coming home.

I’d love to hear from you… if you have a local yarn shop, which one is it? And what do you love about your local yarn shop? Let me know in the comments!

five lace patterns to use in knitting this summer tee

The post Everyday Lace in Stitch Diaries: Season Four appeared first on SweetGeorgia Yarns.

<![CDATA[

We’ve released Stitch Diaries Season Four with five lace patterns written and charted for flat and circular knitting. The best part? You can use any of the stitch patterns in the “recipe” at the end.

The Stitch Diaries is one of my favourite things to produce. It’s half a stitch dictionary, and half pattern recipe, and a dash of my rambling thoughts put together in an 18-page booklet. GRIN.

Stitch Diaries: Season 4 with custom colourway by Teresa Mock dyed on SweetGeorgia Merino Silk Lace

Reflections

I’m always so excited when I get to partner up with one of our SweetGeorgia team members to come up with an exclusive colourway on one of our yarn bases. This quarter, Teresa dreamed up the delicate Reflections colourway on our Merino Silk Lace (swoon, swoon, swoon is all I can say). We wanted a subtle tonal blend that shifted and blended in all the right places.

“The two hues interweaving with each other, with purposeful white spacing, remind me of the final glimmers of light from the setting sun, glistening over the gentle ripples of waves in the beautiful lake I frequented as a child.”

Stitch Diaries: Season 4 with custom colourway by Teresa Mock dyed on SweetGeorgia Merino Silk Lace

Stitch Diaries: Season Four set includes:

  • 2 skeins of a unique, custom colourway imagined and designed by a SweetGeorgia team member: Reflections on Merino Silk Lace
  • An 18-page booklet that is half stitch dictionary and half pattern recipe. You can take any of the five lace patterns and place them inside the included Dames Violet tee pattern (a gorgeous summer top perfect for warm weather). Please note that some sizes will need to add additional yarn to their set.
  • A beautiful stitch marker made exclusively for SweetGeorgia by Ocean Loops Studio

Dames Violet

I took the gorgeous Season Four Reflections colourway—a delicate tonal blend of blue, purple, and white—and designed Dames Violet. It’s the perfect lightweight top for the summer. One-of-a-kind colour with a customizable pattern means you end up with a unique-to-you tee.

mystery knit-alongs and why we do them

<![CDATA[

As you may have seen, we just announced our 6th annual SweetGeorgia Mystery Knit-Along (MKAL) this week! And at today’s Taking Back Friday vlog, I want to talk about this MKAL, why we do this each year, and why you should join!

It’s been a while since I’ve had a minute to sit down and make a proper video… but HERE IT IS… episode 200 of Taking Back Friday!

If you’re new here, I’m Felicia Lo Wong and I’m a knitter whose life changed when I learned how to spin, dye, and weave. I’m in love with the delicate but complex nature of hand-dyed colour and I believe that colour changes everything. My whole mission here at SweetGeorgia (for the past 18 years!) is to bring your life more joy through colour and craft… so let me know if it’s working.

In Episode 200, I’m talking about the SweetGeorgia Mystery Knit-Along and answering the big questions like “why would I want to make something if I don’t know what it’s going to look like?!?” Crazy talk, right? Well, the short answer is, when I join an MKAL, I focus on practicing letting go of expectations and relaxing into the idea of just enjoying being in the moment with your knitting and your knitting friends. And if you’re already signed up for the MKAL, welcome!!

Thanks, as always, for watching these Friday videos. Making them is a joy and I absolutely love reading all your comments.

IN THIS EPISODE

  • what I’m wearing in today’s video: I’m wearing the Navelli design by Caitlin Hunter, which I co-knit with Greta (see more here). It was knit in using our new colourways Tough Love Sock Black Raspberry and Amber Ale.
  • what I’m talking about in today’s video: I’m talking about our 2023 Mystery Knit-Along, Playin’ My Song, designed by Tabetha Hedrick. We have custom MKAL yarn sets, the MKAL pattern pre-order (which comes free with yarn set purchase), and all of the chat will be taking place at our SweetGeorgia Discord server. For knitting tutorials to help you along the way, visit the School of SweetGeorgia. We hope you’ll join us!

once our project is finished, how do we make sure it lasts a lifetime?

<![CDATA[

We’ve all spent hundreds or even thousands of hours on a handknit garment or accessory, from picking out yarn all the way to weaving in our ends. But once our beautiful project is finished, how do we make sure it lasts a lifetime? Here are some of my favourite tips for caring for and storing handknits, to keep your pieces in good condition for years.

Choosing Materials

The process of caring for your handknits actually starts before they exist! Set yourself up for success by choosing materials that will last.

  • Felicia’s philosophy is “work with the best materials you can”. They don’t have to be the most expensive luxury blends or trendy hand-dyed hues. But yarns that are structurally sound, spun from fibres with good strength and memory, and dyed to be colorfast will last longer in a final project, meaning you’ll need to spend less on your handknit wardrobe in the long run.
  • Consider the type of project you’re making when choosing materials. Socks or gloves that will take lots of wear need a sturdy, elastic blend, while softer fibres would be easier to get away with in an evening shawl.

Washing Handknits

Washing handknits isn’t just an important step to remove dirt—it’s also key to keeping fibres healthy and strong, making them last longer.

  • Adjust your washing process depending on fibre type. Wool and other animal fibres benefit from warm water and wool wash such as Soak, while plant fibres prefer cool water. (Don’t use wool wash for cotton and linen, since these washes are formulated with replenishing oils and other cleansers specifically for animal fibres.)
  • Your projects may not need washing as often as you think! Wool, in particular, releases odours naturally, so simply leaving your project to air out after being worn may be enough. I usually air my sweaters out after each wearing and then wash them a couple times a year, or as needed.
  • For more information on washing and blocking, be sure to check out Holli Yeoh’s course Fundamentals to Finishing Knits, and this article on Blocking Animal vs. Plant Fibres.
Caring for and Storing Your Handknits

Storing Handknits

  • Always store handknits folded or laid flat rather than hanging. Since handknit fabric is more malleable than industrial knit fabric, gravity will stretch your pieces out of shape. Hanging for a short amount of time, such as while airing a project, isn’t a problem, but long-term hanging will warp the fabric.
  • If you can, keep your handknits in a drawer or storage container where they won’t snag on other closet items. However, make sure that they get at least some air and/or light—a wooden drawer or a clear plastic tub will keep them from getting musty.
  • Wool attracts moths (nothing like a giant pile of sweaters and shawls to nest in, right?) A lavender sachet or cedar block stored with your knits will deter pests.
  • If you’re short on space, try storing handknits you don’t wear often in clear plastic vacuum bags. You’ll most likely need to air them out a few days before wearing them, or re-block them to smooth out crumples.

Wearing Handknits

Finally, mindfulness when wearing your creations will go a long way to keeping them in good condition.

  • When pairing handknits with ready-to-wear clothing and jewellery, avoid anything that could snag on plies of yarn and break them.
  • Again, air out your knits after wearing them whenever possible so that odours don’t become trapped in the fabric.
  • Do actually wear your knits! Don’t let them sit neglected in storage. Wearing and inspecting your pieces regularly will alert you to maintenance or repairs they may need. Plus, it’s fun!
Caring for and Storing Your Handknits

Love on Your Handknits!

After all the hours spent on our handknits, of course, we’d love to enjoy them for as long as possible. Intentionally caring for and storing them means that we get that much more time to wear them proudly!

tips to set yourself up for successful blocking

The post Blocking Animal vs Plant Fibres appeared first on SweetGeorgia Yarns.

<![CDATA[

When it comes to the fibre arts, a project isn’t finished until it’s blocked! This can be as simple as washing and laying flat to dry, or as detailed as shaping edges and smoothing out inconsistencies. But this process looks a little different depending on the fibre content, particularly when working with plant fibres vs. animal fibres. Let’s go over some key things to keep in mind when working with plant fibres vs. animal fibres, and tips to set yourself up for successful blocking.

Fibre Properties that Impact Blocking

Plant and animal fibres are structurally different, which affects not only your knitting, crocheting, and weaving but also the blocking process. While these may vary slightly depending on which plant or animal fibre you plan to use in your project, these properties generally hold true.

  • Plant fibres lack elasticity and memory compared to animal fibres. This means plant fibres will not stretch as much during the blocking process. It also means the unblocked piece will be more similar in size and appearance to the blocked piece than the same project would be in an animal fibre.
  • Animal fibres “bloom” significantly during blocking, while plant fibres usually do not. Blooming means the yarn fluffs up and the stitches expand/fill out. With a non-superwash yarn, the stitches will also meld together into a cohesive fabric. Plant fibres don’t bloom, though they may soften and relax. This means the final fabric in a plant fibre yarn will be looser and less structured at the same gauge.

With that in mind, let’s talk application.

Consider Blocking Before You Block

The process of preparing to block actually starts the moment you begin your project. In knitting and crochet, for example, the tension of the cast on or starting chain will impact the stretch of the finished piece. Appropriate tension for the intended fabric is important in an animal-fibre project, but even more so in one made with plant fibres. The way animal fibres stretch means they’re more forgiving. So, a cast-on that’s a little too tight can still be eased to fit or a cast-on that’s a little too loose can be smoothed into shape.

But plant fibres often don’t allow for these workarounds during blocking since they have little to no elasticity. This means it’s even more important to pay attention to the tension of your cast-on, since the width it will allow for is locked in from the start. Swatching will help you determine not only your gauge for your chosen stitch pattern, but how tight or loose your cast-on should be.

Speaking of gauge, consider how your intended fit and your gauge intersect with blocking. Compared to plant fibres, animal fibres can be molded more easily when blocking, but plant fibres will often keep their shape better. For a deeper look at how this impacts your gauge and chosen stitch pattern, check out my article for the SweetGeorgia blog, Yarn Substitution: Flaxen Silk for Wool. And for everything you need to know about blocking fabric, from cast-on to pinning out, be sure to watch Holli Yeoh’s School of SweetGeorgia course: Fundamentals to Finishing Knits.

The Blocking Process

The differences in animal vs. plant fibres impact the entire blocking process, beginning with washing. Water and heat affect the fibres differently because of their structures, level of natural oils, and other factors that are beyond this article. Use warm water for animal fibres (the heat relaxes the fibres, which helps with stretching and smoothing) and cool water for plant fibres. Wool wash is helpful for animal fibres, making them more receptive to moisture. But wool wash doesn’t have the same effect on plant fibres and, depending on the ingredients, can weigh them down with excess oils.

When pinning your project, remember that while your animal fibre pieces will stretch more, they’ll also spring back when unpinned if they’re stretched farther than they want to go. Even if the project isn’t overstretched, you may experience some relaxation of the blocked shape. Plant fibre projects won’t stretch in this way, but will keep their blocked shape, so be careful not to pull them larger than you want them, particularly for sized garments.

Let's go over some key things to keep in mind when working with plant fibres vs. animal fibres, and tips to set yourself up for successful blocking. Block with Confidence!

While blocking a different fiber type than we’re used to can feel intimidating, all it takes is a little forethought and a little simple science. With these quick tips in mind, I hope you’re empowered to go forth and block both your animal and plant fibre projects with confidence.

<![CDATA[

So, last Friday I tried something for the very first time. I hosted a live one-hour, virtual co-working session with the members of the School of SweetGeorgia. We sat for an hour in the Zoom room, being super focused, super quiet, and getting a lot of work done. At the same time, I also live streamed my actual work process to YouTube where many of you got to watch me weave off the rest of my project and beam the warp for my next project. Now today, I want to talk a little bit about the process and what I learned.

I hope to see you online later today, June 2nd, at the following craft sessions:

One of the things I value about learning is to try things, figure out what’s working and not working, tweak, and reiterate. All of these things are part of the entire learning process whether it’s about the fibre arts or anything else we’re doing. I value that process. I hope that you will join me as I continue to experiment with all of these different ways of sharing with you the things that we’re doing, the things that we’re making, and how we’re making them.

it's the last day of our half-month make-along

The post ‘Round the Colour Wheel Make-Along Wrap-Up appeared first on SweetGeorgia Yarns.

<![CDATA[

Today, my friends, is the last day of our half-month ‘Round the Colour Wheel Make-Along. And I have to tell you—it’s been quite a challenge!

As per usual, I am a bit behind on my project (as all my personal projects tend to go), but I’ve learned quite a bit. For starters, I am TERRIBLE at stranded knitting. Prior to this make-along, I would use two colours on one hand and treat it similarly to the way I knit my tail ends into the back of the yarn. The results have always been sloppy and inconsistent. This challenge, with a small hat project (Zumbra), gave me the space to try out other techniques to see if I can finally become a bit more consistent and… how do I put this delicately… “not sucky.” HAH!

Stranded Variations

'Round the Colour Wheel Make-Along wrap-up

  • In phase one, I worked two rows in my usual method. You can see some of the CC is more elongated or sunk in.
  • In phase two, I tried working one round twice. First, working only with the MC and slipping the unworked CC stitches, then, I worked the CC colour stitches, slipping the already-worked MC stitches. This seemed to work at first, but there were two consequences. One, it took a lot longer. HA! Two, slipped stitches tend to come out at a tighter gauge than usual, because the strand at the back is shorter. It was harder to maintain tension at the correct gauge.
  • In phase three, I tried to work with two hands: MC on the right, CC in the left. This did not work at all. AT ALL. For whatever reason, my left finger doesn’t follow instructions from my brain and can’t seem to curl enough to hold the yarn and move it to the needle. The yarn kept dropping off or slipping back into my hand. I also couldn’t get my other fingers to hold the working yarn. I see now why I can’t crochet that way, either. What a useless left hand. GRIN. Anyways, I worked two rounds in phase three and hated it so much that I tinked back to re-do.
  • In phase four, and I think is the best looking, I worked with one colour at a time on the same row, but not with two fingers. I worked the MC like normal, dropped it, picked up CC, and worked it like normal. Dropped CC, picked up MC, worked the stitch. It was slightly slower, but I actually found a nice little rhythm by round three and continued the rest of the colourwork section in this manner. I started to get a little sloppier at the end, but I blame the late hour.

'Round the Colour Wheel Make-Along wrap-upSo, my hat made progress and I’m rather pleased to have found a little more love for stranded knitting. I think I am going to rip back to the brim and re-work all of the cololurwork section this way (especially since phase two changed my gauge). I’ll let you know how it goes!

Make-Along Highlights

Over in our Discord group, friends shared their Colour-Along progress, and it was so exciting to see the new things they were trying. Attempting fractal spinning, or stripes, or practice with split single crochet stitches… all new challenges to up the colour game. Here are some of the highlights from the last two weeks:

'Round the Colour Wheel Make-Along wrap-up'Round the Colour Wheel Make-Along wrap-up'Round the Colour Wheel Make-Along wrap-up'Round the Colour Wheel Make-Along wrap-upTomorrow, I’ll draw two winners from the pot and announce them in Discord, so be sure to drop your photos in to the channel for your entry! It’s been so much fun making along with you all.
